Biography

Adania Shibli is a leading contemporary Palestinian novelist and essayist, widely regarded as one of the most significant literary voices to emerge from Palestine in the twenty-first century. She was born in 1974 in Shibli-Umm al-Ghanam, a village in the Upper Galilee, and grew up as a Palestinian citizen of Israel. She holds a doctorate in media and cultural studies from the University of East London and has taught at Birzeit University in the West Bank, dividing her life between Palestine and Europe. Shibli writes in Arabic in a spare, precise, and formally inventive style that sets her apart from earlier generations of Palestinian writers. Her early novels "Touch" and "We Are All Equally Far from Love" established her reputation among critics for their psychological subtlety and their oblique, understated treatment of violence, loss, and the textures of ordinary life under occupation. Her 2017 novel "Minor Detail" brought her international acclaim. Built around a real wartime atrocity from 1949 and a contemporary narrator's obsessive attempt to investigate it, the novel is a tautly controlled meditation on history, complicity, and the limits of knowledge. In English translation by Elisabeth Jaquette it was a finalist for the National Book Award and longlisted for the International Booker Prize, bringing her work to a global readership. In 2023 "Minor Detail" became the center of a major controversy when the German organization LitProm postponed an award ceremony for the book at the Frankfurt Book Fair amid the Gaza war, a decision that drew protest from hundreds of writers worldwide and made Shibli a focal point in debates over freedom of expression and the silencing of Palestinian voices. Though still in mid-career, Shibli has already secured a place as the most internationally prominent Palestinian novelist of her generation. Her work, translated into numerous languages and taught widely, demonstrates the continuing vitality and global reach of Palestinian literature, carrying its concerns into contemporary world fiction with rare artistic discipline.
