Biography
Faisal Abd al-Qadir al-Husseini was the foremost Palestinian leader of East Jerusalem and a pivotal bridge between the PLO leadership in exile and the population of the occupied territories. Born in Baghdad in 1940 into the storied Husseini family, he was the son of Abd al-Qadir al-Husseini, the celebrated commander killed in the 1948 battle for Jerusalem, and the grandson of Musa Kazim al-Husseini, giving him a lineage at the very heart of Palestinian national history. Husseini devoted his political life to defending the Palestinian and Arab character of Jerusalem against Israeli annexation and settlement. He was a founding member of the General Union of Palestinian Students, worked early on for the PLO, and from the 1980s directed the Arab Studies Society, which he turned into a vital institution of Palestinian civic and political life in the city, operating from the Orient House. Under his leadership the Orient House became the de facto political headquarters and diplomatic address of the Palestinian national movement in East Jerusalem, hosting visiting dignitaries and serving as a symbol of Palestinian claims to the city. His prominence drew repeated Israeli reprisals, including imprisonment, administrative detention, and house arrest over the course of decades. He emerged as a leading figure in the diplomatic turn of the late 1980s and early 1990s, representing the Palestinians at the 1991 Madrid Peace Conference and becoming the PLO's principal voice on Jerusalem affairs. Respected across the political spectrum for combining steadfast principle with pragmatic engagement, he was widely seen as a potential unifying national leader before his sudden death from a heart attack in Kuwait in May 2001. Known to admirers as the Lion of Jerusalem, Faisal Husseini embodied the Palestinian struggle for the city and the link between local resilience and national diplomacy. His stewardship of the Orient House and his moral authority made him one of the most respected Palestinian figures of his era.
