Biography
Izzeldin Abuelaish is a Palestinian physician, infertility specialist, and global peace advocate born and raised in the Jabalia refugee camp in the Gaza Strip. Rising from severe poverty, he trained in medicine and specialized in obstetrics and gynecology, later earning a diploma from the Institute of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of London and a master's in public health from Harvard University. Abuelaish became the first Palestinian doctor to hold a staff position at an Israeli hospital, working at the Soroka and Sheba medical centers while continuing to serve patients in Gaza. As a fertility specialist he helped many couples conceive, and as a physician who crossed one of the world's most fraught divides daily, he became a living symbol of medicine practiced across enemy lines. In January 2009, during the Gaza war, an Israeli tank shell struck his home and killed three of his daughters and a niece. Rather than turning to vengeance, Abuelaish channeled his grief into a message of reconciliation, founding the Daughters for Life Foundation to provide scholarships and support for the education and health of young women in the Middle East regardless of nationality or faith. His 2011 memoir, 'I Shall Not Hate: A Gaza Doctor's Journey on the Road to Peace and Human Dignity,' became an international bestseller translated into more than twenty languages, and his story has been the subject of documentaries and worldwide lecture tours. Now a professor of global health at the University of Toronto, he has been nominated multiple times for the Nobel Peace Prize. Abuelaish embodies the intersection of medicine and humanitarianism: a clinician of real expertise whose response to unbearable personal loss made him one of the most recognized Palestinian voices for peace and human dignity in the world.
