Biography
Saleh Bakri is among the most acclaimed Palestinian actors of his generation, a performer whose elegant, internalized screen presence has anchored some of the most important Palestinian and Arab films of the past two decades. Born in 1977 in the Galilee village of Bi'ina, he is the son of the celebrated actor and director Mohammad Bakri and the brother of actors Adam, Ziad, and Mahmood Bakri. He trained at the Beit Zvi School for the Performing Arts and began his career in theatre. His cinematic breakthrough came in 2007 with two notable roles: as the reserved Egyptian band conductor's drummer Khaled in Eran Kolirin's internationally celebrated "The Band's Visit," and as the lead in Annemarie Jacir's "Salt of This Sea" (2008). The latter began a long and fruitful collaboration with Jacir that has become one of the defining actor-director partnerships in Palestinian cinema. Bakri went on to give memorable performances in Elia Suleiman's "The Time That Remains" (2009) and to reunite with Jacir for "When I Saw You" (2012) and, most notably, "Wajib" (2017), in which he starred opposite his own father as an estranged son returning to Nazareth. The real-life and on-screen father-son dynamic gave the film a rare emotional authenticity and earned both actors wide praise. His international profile grew further with a leading role in Maryam Touzani's "The Blue Caftan" (2022), a Moroccan drama that was a critical sensation, screened at Cannes, and shortlisted for the Academy Award for Best International Feature.
