Biography
Sari Nusseibeh was born in 1949 in Damascus, where his mother had taken refuge during the 1948 war, into one of Jerusalem's oldest and most prominent Muslim families; for centuries the Nusseibeh family has held the key to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. He studied philosophy, politics, and economics at Oxford and earned a doctorate in Islamic philosophy at Harvard, bringing the tools of analytic and Islamic philosophy together in his scholarly work. Returning to Palestine, Nusseibeh became a philosophy professor and a central figure in Palestinian intellectual and civic life. He served as president of Al-Quds University in Jerusalem from 1995 to 2014, building it into a major Palestinian institution of higher learning under difficult conditions of occupation, and championing the idea that the university should serve the Palestinian community while upholding open intellectual inquiry. He has been one of the most thoughtful Palestinian advocates of peace and coexistence. He co-authored the 2002 People's Voice Initiative with former Shin Bet director Ami Ayalon, a grassroots framework for a two-state settlement, and over decades played a leading role in successive Israeli-Palestinian negotiations and dialogue efforts, often taking positions that combined moral clarity with pragmatic moderation. Nusseibeh is also a serious philosopher and writer. His books include the acclaimed memoir Once Upon a Country: A Palestinian Life (2007), as well as What Is a Palestinian State Worth? and studies of reason and freedom in Islamic thought. His writing weaves philosophical reflection together with the lived political reality of Palestinians, reaching a broad international readership. In 2008 he was named among the world's most influential public intellectuals in a poll by Prospect and Foreign Policy magazines. Combining scholarship, university leadership, and political engagement, Nusseibeh has been a distinctive voice for Palestinian rights grounded in philosophy, dialogue, and a stubborn commitment to a shared future.
