Biography

Shireen Abu Akleh (1971-2022) was a Palestinian-American journalist for Al Jazeera and one of the most beloved and recognizable figures in Arab broadcast journalism. Over a 25-year career covering the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, she became, in the words of major obituaries, a household name across the Arab world and an icon of Palestinian journalism whose killing while reporting drew global outrage. Born in Jerusalem to a Christian family, she studied journalism at Yarmouk University in Jordan after abandoning architecture, then worked for Voice of Palestine radio and other outlets before joining Al Jazeera in 1997, a year after the network's launch. As one of its first field correspondents, she rose to prominence covering the Second Intifada from 2000, reporting from raids, funerals, and flashpoints across the occupied territories. Abu Akleh's calm, precise, and humane on-air presence made her a trusted voice for millions and a role model for Arab and Palestinian women at a time when few female reporters worked in the field. She combined frontline courage with rigorous storytelling, and her sign-off, 'Shireen Abu Akleh, Al Jazeera, occupied Jerusalem,' became one of the most familiar phrases in Arabic television. Beyond reporting she trained students at Birzeit University's media center, helping shape the next generation of Palestinian journalists. On 11 May 2022 she was shot in the head and killed while covering an Israeli raid in Jenin, wearing a clearly marked PRESS vest; multiple independent investigations concluded she was killed by Israeli fire with no armed Palestinians nearby, and her funeral in Jerusalem drew enormous crowds. Her death became a global symbol of the dangers facing journalists and of impunity in the conflict, prompting investigations by the UN, news organizations, and rights groups. Posthumously honored around the world, Abu Akleh is remembered as a trailblazer who gave voice to Palestinians and whose legacy continues to inspire reporters under occupation.
