Biography
Steve Sabella is a contemporary Palestinian artist working primarily in photography and photographic installation, internationally recognized for work that probes themes of exile, identity, belonging and the psychology of place. Born in Jerusalem in 1975 into a Christian Palestinian family, he grew up in the Old City under occupation, an experience that became central to his art. Sabella's practice transforms personal and collective trauma into intricate, often fragmented photographic compositions. Works such as "In Exile," "Cultural Maps," "38 Days of Re-Collection" and "Metamorphosis" use layering, tessellation and abstraction to convey the disorientation of dispossession and the search for an inner sense of home. He coined the idea of liberating himself from the "mental occupation" imposed by life under colonization. He studied photography and visual arts in Jerusalem and earned advanced degrees in the United Kingdom, including an MA from the University of Westminster and Goldsmiths. His work has been exhibited and collected internationally, entering institutions such as the British Museum, the Nadour Collection and the Institut du Monde Arabe. In 2014 he published "The Parachute Paradox," an acclaimed memoir tracing his journey from Jerusalem to Berlin and his evolution as an artist, which deepened his international profile as both image-maker and writer. Now based in Berlin, Sabella represents a generation of Palestinian artists who address the condition of exile through conceptual and lens-based practice, contributing to the global visibility of Palestinian contemporary art.
